In 1862, as the American Civil War rages in the Southeastern United States, the Southwestern United States is far away from the battle lines, but in New Mexico Territory, good relations between Fort Buchanan, Arizona's commanding officer, Maj. Colton, and Chiricahua Apache chief Cochise are threatened by the arrival of venal government agent Baylor and his equally dishonest scout Mescal Jack.
