The result of McElwee turning his camera on his family and their neighbors, BACKYARD is a humorous and poignant look at odd moments in a genteel Southern town as well as an introduction to characters who would reappear in many of McElwee's subsequent films, including SHERMAN'S MARCH (which McElwee later called BACKYARD a "sketch" for), TIME INDEFINITE, and SIX O'CLOCK NEWS.
