Airport is a 1970 American disaster film directed by George Seaton and starring Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, and Jean Seberg. The movie is based on a novel by Arthur Hailey, which follows the lives of different people connected to Lincoln International Airport in Chicago. The film begins with a brutal winter storm and the airport being shut down. Mel Bakersfeld (played by Burt Lancaster), the general manager of the airport, is under immense pressure to keep the airport operational. The tension is further heightened as a bomber is discovered on board a plane which has yet to take off. With the airport in chaos, it is up to Bakersfeld and his team to prevent a disaster.
As the story unfolds, we are introduced to various characters, including Vernon Demerest (played by Dean Martin), a chief pilot at the airport, with a reputation for being a womanizer. Another character, Tanya Livingston (played by Jean Seberg), is a lonely woman who is trying to leave her past behind and start afresh, but finds herself stuck in a loveless marriage with a wealthy industrialist, played by John Davidson.
Throughout the movie, we see how these characters' lives intersect, and the challenges they face. As the storm continues to rage, a passenger who is desperate to arrive at his destination at any cost attempts to bribe a ground crew worker to fly him out, leading to a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, an elderly woman, who is traveling with her grandson, becomes seriously ill on board a plane. The captain (played by George Kennedy) decides to divert the plane to Los Angeles, creating further chaos at the airport.
As the movie progresses, we are witness to a series of dramatic events, including a runway collision, a tense hostage situation, and ultimately, the discovery of a bomb on board the plane headed for Rome. Amid all this chaos, Bakersfeld and Demerest handle each situation with courage and resolve, ensuring that the passengers and crew are safe.
