Abigail is a fantasy adventure film directed by Aleksandr Boguslavsky, released in 2019. The movie is set in a world where magic is feared and outlawed by the government, resulting in the imprisonment of various mystical creatures and the forced exile of their kind. The plot of the movie revolves around Abigail, a young girl whose father was taken away by the government years ago under accusations of practicing magic. Abigail's dream is to find her father and reunite with him.
One day, Abigail discovers that the city's authorities have attacked and arrested many of its citizens who were rumored to have magic powers. As she investigates more, she learns that a mysterious virus has spread through the city, causing its inhabitants to fall into a mysterious coma. Abigail becomes convinced that the virus was caused by the government using a dangerous and forbidden magic to control its people, but no one in the city will believe her.
Abigail subsequently embarks on a journey to unravel the secrets of the virus and the city's magic, despite the government's attempts to suppress and punish anyone involved with it. Along the way, Abigail meets several characters who either help her in her journey or try to stop her. These characters include a young man named Jem, who becomes her loyal friend as they navigate the city's dangerous streets, and a powerful sorceress named Tatyana, who teaches Abigail how to use her dormant magical abilities that, as it turns out, are hereditary.
The main antagonist of the movie is a woman named Governess, who is the leader of the government and is known to be ruthless in enforcing her laws. Governess is in a relentless pursuit of Abigail, believing that she holds the key to finding a magical artifact that will provide her the ultimate power to rule the city.
Abigail is an action-packed and visually stunning movie with beautiful CGI that transports the audience into a magical and imaginative world filled with enchanting creatures, shimmering plants, and buildings designed to resemble castles. The movie is a blend of adventure, action, and fantasy, with punches of morality and rebellion against an oppressive government. It explores themes of family, love, loyalty, and courage.
Olivia Kate Pritchard, who portrays Abigail, brings the character to life with her impressive acting skills, portraying a young girl who is determined to save her city and find her father while discovering her magical abilities. However, the supporting actors, such as Tinatin Dalakishvili as the sorceress Tatyana, provide poor acting, and their characters come off as one-dimensional. The movie's pacing is slightly slow at times, making it feel slightly longer than it needs to be.
Overall, Abigail is an entertaining and heartwarming movie that will transport viewers into a world of magic, heartbreak, and heroism. The film's epic ending leaves viewers yearning for more and hoping for a sequel.
Abigail is a 2019 family movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
