The story takes place during World War II and tells the true story of the U.S. Navy's efforts to establish an airbase on the island of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. The film opens with naval officer Cassidy (Don Ameche) receiving his newest assignment: to lead a team of Seabees to build an airbase on Guadalcanal. Despite his misgivings about the difficult task, Cassidy accepts the assignment and sets off for the island. Once there, he discovers that the harsh conditions and constant Japanese attacks make the construction of the airbase an almost impossible task.
Despite the odds, Cassidy and his men persevere, working tirelessly to build the base and secure its perimeter against the Japanese attackers. Along the way, they form a tight bond, working together to overcome the obstacles they face. Cassidy finds himself becoming especially close to his fellow officer, Tim Dixon (Dana Andrews), who is dedicated to flying the planes that will soon be stationed at the new base.
As the men work to finish the airbase, they face a series of setbacks, including sabotage from a Japanese infiltrator and a devastating hurricane. Despite these setbacks, Cassidy and his team push on, determined to complete their mission.
In the final scenes of the film, the Japanese launch a massive attack on the airbase. Cassidy and Dixon team up to fight off the Japanese planes and protect the base. Despite the overwhelming odds, they manage to repel the attackers and emerge victorious.
