From Pueblo to City is the fifth episode of the sixth season of Pati's Mexican Table. In this episode, Pati takes us on a journey exploring the contrast between Mexican city life and small-town living. She showcases some of the most delicious dishes from both worlds.
The episode begins in Mexico's bustling capital, Mexico City. Pati visits her local market where she meets a vendor who sells the freshest ingredients for her cooking. She explains to us how, despite the fast-paced lifestyle in the city, people still prioritize cooking and eating with family. She then heads back home to create a classic Mexico City dish- Tacos de Canasta. These tacos are soft and juicy and are usually filled with beans or meat. Pati shows us how to make them and shares her take on this popular street food.
Next, we travel with Pati to the tranquil town of Tepoztlan, Morelos. This vibrant town is famous for its food, culture, and history. Pati spends some time explaining how town life is quieter, and people spend a lot of time outdoors connecting with nature. She then visits the local market where she finds exotic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. She picks out a few ingredients like Nopales (Cactus Paddles), Papalo, and Mariasoy, and takes us back into the kitchen where she whips up a delicious "Tepoznieves" - a signature sorbet made with local fruit and herbs.
The third stop on this culinary adventure is in Mexico city's Downtown, where Pati visits a famous restaurant and tries Escamoles- a Mexican caviar that's considered a delicacy. Afterward, she heads back home to create a Mexican city favorite - Street-Style Tlayudas. Tlayudas resemble giant tostadas that are made from corn dough and are usually topped with refried beans, cheese, meat, and other tasty toppings. Pati's Tlayudas are a burst of flavor and texture- crunchy, creamy, and cheesy – perfect for lunch or a quick snack.
Finally, we head back to Tepoztlan, where Pati shows us how to make "Sopa de Piedra" a traditional soup that's made by cooking seafood on hot stones. The people in this town have made this soup using the same technique for generations, and it's become a cultural staple. Pati shows us how to make a version of this soup using the seafood from her local market and some fresh herbs.
From Pueblo to City is a beautiful showcase of Mexico's food culture, heritage, and lifestyle. Pati's Mexican Table takes us on a journey that highlights how despite the contrast between city life and small-town living, food remains at the center of Mexican culture. This episode is perfect for foodies who want to explore new cultural cuisines and enjoy unique cooking techniques.
